ATHLETICS: Bury Athletic Club’s athletes had a successful day at the Greater Manchester Sportshall Championships, held at SportCity in Manchester.
Star of the day was Aben Abera, who took two golds and a silver in the Under-13 boys’ competition. In the four-lap race, Abera romped to a comfortable victory by more than three seconds in a time of 44.48. He also took first place in the two-lap race, again recording a convincing win with a time of 20.32.
Aben narrowly missed a hat-trick of wins, finishing second in the standing long jump with 2.33 metres.
Bury’s other gold medalist was Jack Williams, whose score of 77 in the U15 boys’ speed bounce gave him victory. Greg Maxwell took bronze with a score of 70. Williams added silver in the six-lap time trial, narrowly losing out in 68.07. Maxwell also added silver in the four-lap time trial (44.76) and reached the final of the two-lap race, finishing sixth in 20.95.
In the U11 boys’ event, Sam Petch ran excellently to finish fourth in the one lap race with a time of 11.86. Sam Brooks finished sixth in a very competitive three-lap time trial (36.72). There were also excellent performances from Alice Priestley, Fiona Gilmore, Chris Pimm and Iestyn Rimmer in the U11 event. The trio of medalists from Bury AC will now hope to be selected to represent Greater Manchester in the North West Regional Sportshall Final at Robin Park, Wigan.
