AS Bury athletes make the transition from cross country and road racing to the track and field season the region's Parkrun events continue to provide a useful source of competition.

Luke Harreld and Sophie Whittaker won the Parkrun events they entered this week, while Rob Granby and Byron Edwards took second and third, respectively.

Harreld took first place at Heaton Park in a time of 17mins 18secs after leading from gun to tape, while Edwards was third in the same race, finishing in 17:59 performance, and Whittaker was first woman home in 19:42.

The young Bury athlete was also first finisher in the 15-17 age category.

Further down the field of 495 finishers, Lizzie Cheshire took 81st place in 23:20 and Sophie Sasimowicz was 194th after clocking a time of 26:51.

Granby took second place in the Wormwood Scrubs Parkrun in London, finishing the course in 18:37, showing a clean pair of heels to his dad, Mark, who finished 15th in 22:52.

Two Bury AC seniors competed in the Bolton Parkrun. Dave Carroll and Dave Flood finished stride by stride in 91st and 92nd place, recording 25:48 and 25:49 respectively.

On Sunday, three Bury athletes took part in the Radcliffe AC multi terrain 10k race. Ben Coop ran strongly to record 36:52 and take 11th place behind winner Tom Carson of Horwich.

Giles Bennett was second Bury finisher was in 54th position with a time of 42:20 effort.

Dave Avery produced a 49:11 run to take 173rd place out of a field of 312 runners.

Bennett made his fell running debut the previous weekend in the Rivington Pike race, taking a creditable 88th place out of a field of 257 runners after finishing in 24:53.

Bury’s younger athletes performed well at the first Trafford Medal meeting of the season, producing a string of personal bests.

In the under-13s girls events, Katherine Townsend won the discus with a throw of 13.53m. She consolidated this performance with a personal best of 10.9 in the 75m sprint.

Daisy Worthington ran her 800m in 2:46, completed the 70m hurdles in 14.1 and produced a personal best of 14.14m in the javelin.

Jenny Salmon ran a promising 11.7 for the 75m sprint on her debut as a Bury athlete and produced a 2.79m leap in the long jump.

Hattie Vaughan recorded three personal bests in the u15s girls events. She finished the 200m in 29.6, put in a leap of 4.21m in the long jump and took an excellent third place in the high jump with 1.40m.

Heledd Rimmer ran the 75m hurdles in 18.0 and produced a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 17.02m.

Dan Matthews recorded a new personal best of 3.69m in the u15s boys' long jump.

Bury have three young athletes competing for the North West team in the Sports Hall Athletics National finals at Sportcity in Manchester over the weekend of April 25-26.

Grace Goodsell, Daisy Worthington and Patrick Clarke will all compete in the u13s events.
