IT has been another week where the black and white quartered vests of Bury Athletic Club have taken top honours in events.

Ben Coop and Donna Cartwright were once again winners over the fells, this time in Wednesday’s Eddie’s Revenge 3.8 mile race in the moors above Shaw. The course sees athletes climb over 1,050 feet in what the organiser’s describe as a lung-buster! Ben held off the challenge from Borrowdale’s Mike Fanning to come home 11 seconds clear in 25:47. Donna’s victory in the women’s category was more decisive as she finished well over a minute ahead of her nearest rival with a time of 31:52. Both athletes are benefitting from the hard work they are putting in under the guidance of coach Dave Cole.

Two of Bury’s younger members competed in the Stockport Harriers Young Athletes Quadrathon at Sportscity on Saturday. Grace Goodsell finished fourth overall in the high quality competition.

In the 100m Grace set a new personal best of 13.5 seconds, the fastest in the competition, and a time which makes her the fastest in the event in her age group in the North West. Grace also set a pb in the long jump, leaping an enormous 4.45m, moving her up to joint fourth in the region. Daisy Worthington joined Grace in the long jump posting a best distance of 3.76m. The two young athletes also competed in the shot putt, with Grace’s best throw of 5.32m marking a respectable competition debut for her. Daisy putted a distance of 4.13m. The final event for Grace was the 800m in which she produced a strong run to record 2.46.7, again a personal best performance.

Edinburgh University student Caitlin Cole travelled back north to participate in the Edinburgh Parkrun, coming home as the first women finisher and setting a new personal best time of 19:09. Caitlin was joined by fellow Bury AC member Josh Taylor, returning from injury and taking 20.14 to complete the 5km course.

Bury AC athletes were also at the fore in the Bury Junior Schools Sports Association Track and Field championships hosted by the club on the Market Street track on Saturday morning. Hundreds of young athletes and their parents and teachers enjoyed the sunny conditions. Highlights of the performances included Erin Kenyon and Elliot Savage’s runs in their respective 600 metres races where both showed great tactical awareness by not getting caught up in the early fast pace, but then applied pressure over the second half of their races to finish well clear of the field. Jack Andrew produced a powerful sprint to win his event and Evan Savage and Jay Cook were medallists in their field events. Christ Church Ainsworth were the overall championship winners and the meeting demonstrated the rich potential that exits in Bury.

Next Sunday will see Bury host the Cheshire League fixture at the Market Street track with the first event starting at 11.30am.
