RADCLIFFE Athletic Club’s Fiona Lynch battled grim conditions to come home first woman in The Ultimate 55km Trails Challenge in the Lake District.

Flying Fiona broke the women’s course record clocking 6hrs 48mins and won her vet-40 age group.

She was presented with a magnificent bronze plate of the Lake District.

Organised by Lakeland Trails and billed as a stepping stone to the world of ultra-running, the event on Saturday started and finished in Rothay Park, Ambleside and took in dramatic scenery of the Lakes, including 5,784 feet of climbing.

Runners faced wet conditions which made it even harder. Pushed to her limit, Lynch said: “It rained a lot of the time but visibility was great and it was good, challenging running with an atmosphere that was friendly and welcoming.”

Sinead Hayes also completed the challenge, finishing 271st out of 449 runners in a time of 9:47:00.

There was a good turnout of 13 runners at the recent midweek Eddie’s Revenge Fell Race, part of the Run The Moors Grand Prix in which Radcliffe take on other local clubs.

Covering  3.8 miles and climbing 1,060 feet from Shaw in Oldham, Ian Warrington was first home for Radcliffe in 31:49, 33rd out of 132 runners. James Hall was 43rd in 32:41 and Lynch, warming up for her Lakeland challenge, clocked 32:51 to finish 48th.

Other finishers: Chris Paxton 34:19, Kris Lee 34:38, Paul Swyers (V50) 35:13, Mark Wolfenden (V45) 38:50, Dave Bartlett 39:03, Mauro Rotondi (V45) 41:20, Kate Holden (V40) 41:51, Sinead Hayes 46:14, Caroline Mullineaux (V40) 46:21 and Chris Fletcher 48:26secs.

Zena Knowles made it a family affair when she joined thousands in the Colour Run 5k at the Etihad stadium in Manchester.

What is billed as “the happiest 5k on the planet” was untimed and those taking part in white t-shirts were plastered in colour as they ran through clouds of powder paint on the way round. Zena ran with her mum Anita, sister Rhian and daughter Harley.

At the 5k Bolton parkrun, Mark Williams was 21st home in 21:23, with Eileen Royle following in 27:18 and Rob Lister (V50) in 27:19.
