BURY Athletic Club duo Hattie Vaughan and Grace Goodsell had a real spring in their step after jumping their way to titles at the Northern AAs Junior Championships in Middlesborough.

Vaughan knocked 10cm off her previous best championship performance in the under-15s pole vault on the Saturday, moving up to ninth in the UK rankings in her age group.

Not to be outshone, Grace Goodsell won the u15s long jump the following day. She secured victory with a best jump of 5.21m, winning by just 1cm.

While the jump did not match Goodsell's personal best of 5.33m, set earlier in the year, her victory was all the more remarkable as the 13-year-old still has another year in the age group.

She is currently 14th in the UK u15s rankings, but when athletes a year older than her are discounted she is second in the country.

Ben Coop was Bury's sole competitor in the Pilgrims Cross fell race, finishing the 10km course over the moors north of Holcombe in fourth place in a time of 41mins 03secs.

As part of the nation’s biggest sports day, Bury will be hosting an I Am Team GB event on Saturday aimed at giving local youngsters an opportunity to try out athletics.

Children and youths interested in taking part should register at the Market Street track from 12.30pm.

They will be given the chance to take part in warm-up games, field events, such as javelin, discus, hammer, long jump and high jump, as well as hurdles and sprints, between 1pm and 3pm.

Competitions will be held from 3pm to 4pm, when parents will also be given the opportunity to take part.
