RAMSBOTTOM Running Club chairman Rowan Ardill has described the club's affiliation to England Athletics as an important step for the fledgling group.

Members will now be able to race in club colours and will be protected by group insurance when out competing or training with the club.

Ardill says it is the final piece in the jigsaw in getting the club up and running.

"It’s great news that England Athletics have formally accepted our affiliation and we are now a fully-fledged club," said Ardill, after seeing the club grow to more than 70 members since he set it up in September last year.

"To be able to afford insurance to all our members when they train and race, and to be properly recognised, is an important step for the club.

"We have loved welcoming so many new faces to our weekly runs and look forward to joining together as a club when we begin entering races in the coming months."

Club members meet every Tuesday night for sessions led by qualified run leaders.

They meet at 7pm at Irwell Works brewery in Square Street, heading off on routes of varying distances around Ramsbottom before returning to the brewery for a social drink afterwards.

Ardill added: "The club has proven a big success in getting people outside – whatever the weather – and a pleasing aspect has been the sociability of the group.

"It is such a friendly club, it’s been a real pleasure to be involved – and long may it continue."

The club has been busy working with its members to provide plenty of additional opportunities to gain qualifications and training.

Members have recently undertaken training with Bury Society for Blind and Partially Sighted People (BSBPSP) on how to make sessions accessible to its patrons, while first aid and run leader courses have also taken place.

Bury Council has been a big supporter of the new club, providing grants to help provide vital hi-vis safety equipment and other items aimed at growing the club.

"We are really fortunate to have a strong base, and some very supportive council employees, which is helping us to keep going from strength-to-strength," added Rowan.
