SOPHIE Whittaker shrugged off the celebrations of the Red Rose Cross Country League presentation night to win the women's race and set a new personal best at the 3-1-5 10k in Lancaster the following day.

The Bury Athletic Club runner joined her team-mates in taking the plaudits at the Red Rose dinner after winning the women's under-20s title and finishing third in the senior competition, as well as helping the club to two team titles.

But she demonstrated her dedication to the sport in Lancaster to blitz the field in a time of 38mins 54secs.

Elsewhere, Ben Coop and Giles Bennett clocked new personal best times in the competitive Trafford 10k.

Coop finished 136th in 33:05, while Bennett knocked a second off his previous best to cross the finish line in 38:54 and 323rd place.

The race was won by GB international Chris Thompson.

Four Bury members ran in the Irwell Valley 20-mile trail race, using the course as marathon preparation.

Benn Heywood ran strongly to finish 13th place overall with a time of 2:19:54.

Next home was Byron Edwards in 18th (2:24:24) with Jenny Yates following and winning the FV50 category in 2:46:10.

Colin Smith finished 98th out of a field of 250 finishers, ducking under the three-hour mark in 2:56:52.

Bury had nine young athletes running in the 60m sprint events at the Sale Indoor meeting at SportCity, with Grace Gibson winning her u15s race in 8.00. Other u15 competitors were Catherine Russell (9.42PB) and Jerel Livingston (8.04).

The u17s races were contested by Bury's Charlotte Larkin (8.41), Hattie Vaughan (8.54), Amy Garroch (8.90), Ella Tyrell (9.02) and new members Michael McNeill (8.19) and Juba Lawal (8.25).

Eight athletes competed in the 200m with great additional runs from Jerel Livingston (25.68PB), Michael McNeil (26.43), Hattie Vaughan (27.70), Charlotte Larkin (27.78), Ella Tyrell (30.39) and Catherine Russell (31.40).

They were joined by u15s runners Katherine Townsend (29.04) and Charlotte Speakman-Farnworth (29.50).

Three athletes competed in the 60m hurdles with a winning performance and new personal best from Amy Garroch (10.45) and PBs from Charlotte Speakman-Farnworth (10.76) and Ella Hall (13.03).

In the field events, Grace Goodsell produced an excellent victory in the long jump with a leap of 5.21m.

Jerel Livingston recorded a jump of 5.27m in his long jump event and Jack Hutson made a debut for Bury with a jump of 3.63m.

Amy Garroch competed in the high jump and took the bar up to 1.35m, while Hattie Vaughan equalled her PB in the pole vault with a 3.25m effort.

Three athletes competed in the shot put, with Ellis Greenwood putting in a season's best of 7.38m.

Ella Hall produced a throw of 7.20m, while Charlotte Speakman-Farnworth set a new best of 5.65m.
