THERE were personal bests galore for the Bury Athletic Club athletes who competed in the Salford 10k on Good Friday.

In total, eight of the 11 Bury runners who took part – Ben Coop, Byron Edwards, Matt Grice, Giles Bennett, Sophie Whittaker, Chris Mackay, Stefan Kalambouka and Andy Worthington – set new benchmarks for the distance.

Coop was the club's first athlete home in 32mins 36secs, finishing 21st in the 600-strong field.

Dave Cullen was 66th in a season’s best of 35:44, only five seconds ahead of Byron Edwards, whose time of 35:49 was his third personal best in two weeks and earned him seventh place in the V40 race.

Matt Grice finished 114th in 37:56, 11 places ahead of Giles Bennett, whose 38:21 earned him seventh place in the V50 race.

Sophie Whittaker was second junior female in 38:34, while Chris Mackay broke 40 minutes for the first time in his 39:19.

Young Stefan Kalambouka was ninth male junior in 40:21, while Katie Geelan was second F40 in 40:54.

Andy Worthington clocked 41.59 to finish in the first 200, while Alison Dale took a break from coaching and volunteering to finish 401st in a time of 51:04.

On Saturday, three Bury members took on the Rivington Pike fell race, with Benn Heywood running strongly to take 19th place in 19:58.

Giles Bennett finished 103rd in 23:50, while Sean Constantine was 133rd in 25:09 on his debut for Bury.

In the Bolton Dualthlon the previous weekend, Chris Mackay was 32nd with a total time of 1:53:25 for the event, which is a 28k bike ride sandwiched by two 6k runs. Nigel Brady was 69th in 2:08:14.

Colin Smith went to Boston for his second ever marathon, which he finished in 4:14:44.

Four junior athletes competed in the Lancashire Combined Events competition that took place in Hyndburn over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Daisy Worthington, Charlotte Speakman-Farnworth, Amy Garroch and Erin Garroch all performed well. Daisy finished second in the open event while Charlotte set a new best in the 800m, beating several top-ranked athletes in the process.
