A RECORD 74 teams entered the Terry Nortley Two-Mile Relay Race at Close Park in Radcliffe on Bank Holiday Monday.

Radcliffe Athletic Club sported 16 teams, made up of club members, friends and family.

Each team of four ran two laps of the Terry Nortley Mile, named after the club's former president, who died in 2011.

It was a fun day with Prestwich AC putting in many teams, with lots of juniors and several other teams from local clubs, including Ramsbottom, Rochdale and Burnden.

A men's team from Middleton Harriers were the fastest, which was started by Terry Nortley's wife Vera and his brother Harry, but the event is more about the taking part than medals.

It was organised by Radcliffe AC member Vince Ashton. With the help of clubmates it has grown from strength to strength and money raised will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Fiona Lynch led home a gang of four intrepid Radcliffe Athletic Club runners at the challenging Three Peaks Fell Race in the Yorkshire Dales.

She finished the 23-mile event, which includes 5,276 feet of climbing, in 4hrs 36mins 12secs.

Both Luigi Salzano (4:39:32) and Paul Swyers (V50 – 4:59:43) dipped under the five-hour mark. For Swyers it was the end of an even longer journey after he was timed out in his three previous attempts.

Mauro Rotondi (V40) also took part, clocking 5:01:30 in the 63rd running of the annual event, which takes in the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

There was a good turnout of 15 at the 10-mile Cake Race from Diggle in Saddleworth on Saturday.

The fell race, with a lot of fast ground along with its 1,700 feet of climbing, was just the job for Neal Emmerson, who was 16th out of 281 runners in 1:14:59. He was perhaps tempted by the cake to eat at the finish line and the cake competition after the event.

Chris Paxton finished in 38th (1:21:26) and Ian Warrington in 54th (1:23:35).

Other finishers

Dave Rushton (V50) 1:24:17, Scott Baxter 1:36:22, Katie Percival 1:37:36, Nick Barnes 1:37:46, John Andrew (V40) 1:38:36, Kris Lee (V40) 1:48:15, Lisa Carter (V45) 1:48:28, Kate Holden (V40) 1:53:16. Susanne Andrew (V40), Mark Emmett (V55), Ian Hopkinson (V40) and Wayne Holden ran together and finished in 2:17:40.

Dave Rushton made it a double for the weekend when he ran in the Keswick Half Marathon the following day, clocking 1:42:00 on a hilly but scenic course which went round Derwentwater and an extra loop round the Newlands Valley.

Other finishers

Sarah Oxley 2:21:00, Sarah Rushton 2:33:00 and Lucy Dewhurst 2:42:00.

Kirsten Cook and Carly Rourke took part in the Piece of Cake 10k in Boggart Hole Clough, in Blackley and clocked 56:33 and 56:43, respectively.

Karen Doherty won herself a bottle of wine and was second woman and first V40 when she ran the Northern Vets monthly 10k run at Crossford Bridge, Sale, clocking 58:58. Jim Rhodes ran the 5k and was third V75 in 38:41.
