RADCLIFFE Athletic Club's veterans made a splash at last weekend's Red Rose Cross Country League event in Chorley.

The women's team claimed second place in the veterans category and fifth place overall.

A total of 29 Radcliffe runners took on the tricky conditions, facing deep stream crossings and mud on a tough hilly course.

Donna Cartwright (V40) was 10th overall out of 151 runners, with Fiona Lynch (V40) 32nd, Katie Percival 35th and Jenny Yates third V50 in 45th place.

Cartwright, Lynch and Percival took the fifth-team place, with Cartwright, Lynch and Yates coming second among the vets.

New member Helen Andrew (V45) was 58th and Kate Holden (V40) was 66th.

Other Radcliffe finishers included Paula Abernethy (V50), Sarah Scott, Lisa Carter (V45), Caroline Mullineaux (V40), Chemane Brier, back into her racing after injury, Susanne Andrew (V40) and Karen Doherty (V40).

The club had three runners taking part from their new junior section – Fleur Carter, Harry Andrew and Ewan Warr.

Among the men, Neal Emmerson was 30th out of 250 runners, Ian Warrington 68th and John Wrigley 123rd.

Also running were Mike Kontowtt (V50), Mauro Rotondi (V40), John Andrew (V40), Scott Baxter, Kris Lee (V40), Ken Smith (V60), Steve Hamer (V55), Peter Warr (V40), Gavin Durman and Ian Hopkinson (V40). 

Amanda Hey was first woman V55 in the Tatton Park Half Marathon in a time of 1hr 48mins 20secs.

She was 58th woman out of 478 and 372nd overall out of 1,121 runners.

Hey said: "It was a brilliant course with a bit of everything and one to recommend for next year."

John Barton clocked 1:00:38 in the five-mile Dunnerdale Fell Race in the Lake District, which covered 1,800 feet of climbing on the rugged fells of Lickle and the Duddon valleys.

Five Radcliffe members ran the Windmill 10k, a fast and flat course on the coastal front of Lytham and Fairhaven Lake, starting from the windmill at Lytham St Annes.

Dave Rushton (V50) clocked 43:44 and his wife Sarah claimed a personal best with 58:34 – more than two minutes faster than her effort two years ago, when she first ran the race.

The club's other finishers were: Michael Gilmore 44:37, Sarah Oxley 59:31 and Shaun Boult 1:01:53.
