MACCABI D got the better of Division Four rivals Carlton Club D for the first time in three meetings this season to win the Dwyer Cup.

The Maccabi trio of Barry Cohen, Louis Samuels and Sheldon Lee had the advantage of a 145-111 start from the handicapper on the strength of Carlton having won one of the two league duels 6-4 and drawn the other 5-5.

But Carlton never looked like making up the deficit and the nearest they got to Maccabi was 32.

Cohen won two sets and Samuels and Lee won one each for Maccabi while Evans won three and Cheyne two for Carlton.

The Sponsors Cup, featuring all the first round knockout losers, proved a triumph for the handicapper, producing a nailbiting final in which Claybank from Division Three beat Division One side Prestwich A.

The handicaps, based on the Dwyer Cup, gave Prestwich a 143 deficit to make up and, while their three-man team of Adam Rowbotham, George Jones and Colin Boardman predictably reined in their opponents, it was the Claybank trio of Graham Daniels, John Riley and Martin Nicholls who prevailed, edging it in a dramatic last set to run out 489-487 winners.

Rowbotham appeared to have put Prestwich on course for victory when he narrowed the deficit to five, winning games 14-12, 11-6 and 11-4.

But Daniels picked up important points to hold off the challenge and secure the cup by two points for Claybank.

Ramsbottom Town D made up a 52-point deficit to beat Holmar D to win the Lomax Cup by an 18-point margin, and Shawfield C beat BGSOB A in the Hilton Cup final.
