NEW-look Prestwich A are out to challenge the 20-year dominance of Ramsbottom A in the Bury and District Table Tennis League. Ian McLean has returned to the local league to play for Prestwich after an absence of 25 years, resuming his interest in table tennis after giving up cricket in which he captained Saddleworth. Along with McLean, the Prestwich squad has plenty of big-hitting firepower including the likes of Duncan Hadfield, Paul King, Nathan Buckley, Darryl Meredith and Darren Lindley. They brushed aside their own B team 9-1 in their latest fixture after being held to a 5-5 draw at Radcliffe CC in their opening match. Lindley and McLean each won their three matches to send out an ominous warning to their rivals. The A team’s home match against Rammy – Division One champions for the last two decades – on Wednesday will be the first test in their head-to-head battle for supremacy. “I am already enjoying the camaraderie among the players in the teams,” said McLean. “The sportsmanship side of things was something I felt had, a little bit, gone out of the cricket. “We have a big enough squad for us to rotate the players on a weekly basis, so, hopefully, we may be able to get close to Ramsbottom.” League table, results, fixtures and the top 10 rankings are available online at www.burytabletennis.org.uk.
