BURY’S JD Stadium could soon be hosting international matches, the Football Association has confirmed.
A spokesman for the FA revealed it is in negotiations with the club over staging an England Under-18s friendly.
The date and potential opposition are yet to be finalised, but the Bury Times/The Bolton News understands it will be against the Netherlands in September.
“It is under strong consideration that we will host a game at Bury in the near future,” said the FA spokesman. “An announcement is due shortly.”
The club directors declined to comment at this stage.
But if an agreement can be reached with the FA then it will be seen a major reward for their £150,000 investment to relay the pitch over the summer.
Extensive work has been carried out to improve the drainage and surface in readiness for the new campaign.
A recent match against Sheffield Wednesday, which was due to be Bury’s first home match of the pre-season, was moved to the AJ Bell Stadium in Salford in order to allow the new pitch more time to bed in.
Bury’s first game on the new surface will now be on Wednesday, when they host Championship side Blackburn Rovers, kick off 7.45pm.
