BURY manager David Flitcroft was not surprised to see Danny Mayor make the final shortlist for League Two player of last season in this year’s North West Football Awards.

The 24-year-old winger is one of three players up to make the division’s final shortlist, alongside Rochdale forward Ian Henderson and Fleetwood right-back Conor McLaughlin after more than 20,000 votes were cast to whittle down a wider choice of nominations across all four divisions.

“It is not a surprise to me because as a football fan, not just a manager, Danny Mayor is the kind of player I want to see,” said Flitcroft.

Mayor joined the Shakers on loan from Sheffield Wednesday last summer and went on to score five goals in 42 appearances before signing a permanent deal with the club at the end of the campaign.

Flitcroft added: “Fans pay money to come and watch their team and they deserve to be entertained.

“Exciting players like Danny do not just have an effect on a game, they have an effect on your emotions.

“The way he glides over the pitch and makes split-second decisions at speed, there is no better player at what he does in League Two.”

The winner will be announced at an event at Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground on Tuesday, November 18.
