BURY may have the firepower to scare any team in League Two but manager David Flitcroft is concerned his misfiring forward line is costing the team dear.

The Shakers extended their winless streak to seven games this week with damaging defeats at Oxford United in the league and at Luton in the FA Cup.

Bury’s four main strikers – Ryan Lowe, Danny Nardiello, Danny Rose and Hallam Hope – have managed just two goals between since the club’s last victory on November 8.

The team has only scored four goals in total, and never more than one in a single game, during their current bad run.

But while Flitcroft is adamant his side will still achieve “special things” this season - despite finding themselves four points adrift of the play-off places – he accepts they need to sharpen up in the final third to revive their flagging fortunes.

“We have got to have more devilment in our play going forward and it is something I am going to be looking at over the next few weeks,” he promised.

“We have got to start scoring. We have got some fantastic strikers and I have got to get them into a position to score goals by taking more risk in the final third.”

Flitcroft is also conscious recent losses have been caused by defensive mistakes, with goalkeeper Shwan Jalal at fault for Luke Rooney’s goal at Luton on Tuesday night.

It is clear his side need to tighten up at both ends, but the Bury boss believes how his players go about scoring goals, rather than conceding them, is the more pressing concern.

“At times we try to score the perfect goal and as you have seen at Luton, you don’t need to score a perfect goal to win a football match, you just have to score,” he added.

“The individual errors leading to the goals we have been conceding have been poor.

“There has only been one good goal we have conceded this season, and that was our first against Cheltenham, who scored with a 20-yarder.

“The rest have been errors that this team have to stop making.

“But it is (the lack of) goals that are costing us.”

Centre-back Pablo Mills is struggling to overcome a groin strain to be fit for Saturday’s visit of struggling York, although on-loan defenders Adam El-Abd and Rob Milsom should return after being unavailable for FA Cup duty.

And Flitcroft has an otherwise clean bill of health as he bids to conjure up that much-needed victory.

“I want to get our home fans that win they deserve. I want to get our players the win they deserve,” he added.

“Saturday represents a good opportunity for us to get three points and put a marker down to show we are resolute as a team, resolute as a squad and resolute as a football club.”
