BURY will go into the final day of the League Two season with automatic promotion still up for grabs following a dramatic penultimate round of fixtures.
Tom Soares’ first-half header and a late goal from substitute Ryan Lowe proved enough to see off Wimbledon at the JD Stadium.
The victory saw Bury leapfrog Wycombe, who went down to a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Morecambe, but 10-man Southend moved up to third place after scoring a late winner at home to play-off chasing Luton.
That sequence of results moved Bury up to fourth place in the table, two points behind the Shrimpers.
But if Southend fail to win their final match of the season at Morecambe then Bury will be promoted if they can take all three points at already relegated Tranmere, due to their superior goal difference.
League Two as it stands:
3. Southend 84 (+18)
..................................
4. Bury 82 (+19)
5. Wycombe 81 (+21)
Remaining matches: Tranmere v Bury, Morecambe v Southend, Northampton v Wycombe (all to be played on Saturday, May 2.
