ACCRINGTON Stanley missed a stoppage-time penalty as Bury hung on to secure a place in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Hallam Hope opened the scoring for the Shakers two minutes after the break before Andrew Tutte doubled their advantage midway through the second half.

But the home side almost forced a late comeback after substitute Gerardo Bruna scored seven minutes from time and Sean McConville blew his chance of taking the match to penalties with a wild spot-kick on 92 minutes.

There was no sign of the late drama to come in an opening half at the Wham Stadium that was equally as quiet as Bury’s transfer deadline day.

Manager David Flitcroft failed to boost his squad with any new signings, while it was confirmed that young keeper Christian Walton had cut short his season-long loan from Brighton due to a groin injury.

A rumoured move to Aston Villa for Bury youth graduate Jack Ruddy also failed to materialise, with the Premier League side instead signing Montenegrin U21 international Matija Sarkic from Anderlecht.

Ruddy was on the bench as Lainton retained his place in the starting line-up.

The former Wanderers keeper was barely tested in an opening half that was low on chances for both sides.

Andrew Tutte curled the Shakers' best effort goalwards from the edge of the box but his shot was gathered by Stanley stopper Ross Etheridge.

Mellis also dragged a low shot wide from distance, while Hope, who cut a lonely figure up front, fired over after opening up space with a cheeky nutmeg.

At the other end, Lainton made a smart save low to his right to palm away a McConville free kick.

But the Bury keeper was rescued by Matty Foulds on his first start for the club, the youth defender clearing an improvised Adam Morgan header off the line after Lainton had fumbled a cross.

Flitcroft acted decisively at half time, making a double substitution to send on summer signings Reece Brown and Tom Pope.

Pope made an immediate impact, laying off the ball for Hope to fire Bury ahead on 47 minutes.

The substitute did well to wrestle the ball from Tom Davies on the edge of the box and his short pass found Hope, who drilled it into the bottom corner to register his first goal for 16 months.

The former Everton striker's last strike came in a hat-trick against Portsmouth in April, 2014 while on loan at Bury, before he secured a permanent move last November.

A combination of Joe Riley and Nathan Cameron came close to doubling the Shakers’ advantage on 56 minutes.

Riley’s blistering free kick from 25 yards stung the fingertips of Etheridge and the Bury captain was unable to adjust himself quickly enough to head the rebound into an empty net.

Tutte eventually unlocked the home defence for the second Shakers goal on 70 minutes when he latched on to a great through-pass from midfield partner Jacob Mellis before lifting the ball over the onrushing Etheridge.

Flitcroft’s side were forced to endure a nervous finish to the tie, however, as substitute Bruna put the ball under the dive of Lainton to pull a goal back on 83 minutes.

Riley then upended McConville in the box, but the Stanley midfielder got off the deck to take the penalty and screwed his effort high and wide, ensuring Bury go into the hat for Saturday's draw.
