BURY fell out of the League One play-off places after suffering a second straight away defeat.

Sullay Kaikai’s first-half strike and an acrobatic volley from Abu Ogogo on 73 minutes earned Shrewsbury a third home win of the season.

The Shakers had not tasted defeat on their travels since January before Tuesday night’s loss at Bradford.

But they were unable to bounce straight back after falling victim to a smash and grab at Greenhous Meadow.

Micky Mellon’s men only created three meaningful chances and converted two of them, Kaikai serving warning with a volley that hit the post on 24 minutes before firing the opener four minutes later.

His angled drive from the right of the box went straight under the body of debutant goalkeeper Aaron McCarey.

The 23-year-old’s signing on a one-month loan from Wolves was confirmed an hour before kick off after first-choice stopper Rob Lainton was unable to recover from an abductor muscle injury picked up in midweek.

Bury also handed a debut to Chris Eagles, who replaced the injured Craig Jones on the right of midfield.

The former Bolton Wanderers and Burnley man looked bright in the opening stages, when Leon Clarke had a goal ruled out for a push on his marker Zak Whitbread.

Danny Mayor was also rampant in the first half, cutting the Shrewsbury right-back to shreds and putting left-back Chris Hussey in behind the home defence on numerous occasions.

But for all Bury’s possession, they struggled to create clear-cut openings, with Mayor having a good shot saved and captain Nathan Cameron heading their best chance wide on 54 minutes.

By that time Eagles had already gone off, tiring after his first match since the last game of last season for previous club Charlton.

Flitcroft put on strikers Tom Pope and Danny Rose to attempt to force the issue but they never looked like getting back into the game after Ogogo’s scissor-kick from just inside the box flew into the top corner, seemingly through the hands of McCarey.

And worse was to come in the final 10 minutes when Cameron limped off the pitch after going down with a twisted knee.

The defeat extended Bury's winless run to five matches in all competitions as they fell one place in the table to seventh, now seven points behind league leaders Gillingham.
