BURY all-rounder Mohammed Jehangir powered them to their maiden victory of the Premier Division campaign at home on Saturday.

The Radcliffe Road men claimed a five-wicket win at home to Heywood following an accomplished display with bat and ball from Jehangir.

He bowled out Heywood’s top scorer Danny Pawson for 73 as the visitors struggled to 209-4, then hit 72 not out to steer Bury past their target with four overs to spare.

“Jehangir was arguably our best bowler and batted beautifully with a patient but no-mercy approach to anything just off line,” said Wayne Belston. “He hit some lusty blows which saw us quickly accelerate towards the 200 mark.

“Then deposited the ball into Bury Church for the winning runs to seal what was a much-needed morale-boosting win.”

The victory moved Bury up to fourth-bottom, while a second win of the campaign for Greenmount, by 60 runs at home to Flixton, moved them into fourth.

After a stop-start beginning to the season, the Premier Division table is now taking shape, with Prestwich clear at the top following their 94-run victory at Unsworth.

Chris Williams’ Unsworth side are bottom, still in search of their first win, after they struggled to make an impression with the bat against the early-season pacesetters.

Kevin Ramsay set up a gettable run chase after his 5-44 from 11 overs restricted Prestwich to 228-9. The league leaders capitulated somewhat from 176-2 after Ramsay started to get in amongst them.

Unsworth’s star man with the ball then top scored with the bat, but after he was trapped lbw by Sam Holden for 32 the Pole Lane men fell from 107-4 to 134 all out.

There was plenty of good news for local sides in the lower divisions.

Elton moved up to fifth place in Division One with a 47-run victory at home to Swinton Moorside, while Walshaw and Woodbank are first and second, respectively, following good wins.

Walshaw cruised to a seven-wicket victory after bowling out previously unbeaten Roe Green for just 98. Kendrick Hatton finished with the best figures of 4-23, with Ryan Tazelaar (2-32), Nick Murphy (2-26) and Stephen Holt (2-12) sharing the remaining wickets.

Saif Bhojani (31no) and Murphy (30no) then guided Walshaw home following an early wobble.

Woodbank, meanwhile, were made to fight for a third win of the campaign at bottom side Astley and Tyldesley. Good knocks from John Whitehead (66) and Ryan Barker (42no) helped them post a reasonable total of 210-9, which they were able to defend thanks to a disciplined bowling display. Barker (2-30), Damian Stringer (2-51) and Nick Kennedy (2-54) restricted Astley and Tyldesley finished to 193-7.

Brooksbottom won the battle of the Division Two strugglers, beating Radcliffe by three wickets to claim their first victory of the season.

Pro Luke Benaquista and Zeb Qureshi starred with bat and ball. Benaquista took 4-46 and Qureshi 4-56 to bowl out Radcliffe for 171. Brooksbottom’s Australian star then opened with 56 before Qureshi came in at seven to see Brox home with an unbeaten 48.

“It was great to get that first league win,” said Brooksbottom captain Richard Ernill. “The lads were buzzing afterwards.”

Elton Vale and ELPM remain in the top three in Division Four West following victories on Saturday, while Tottington St Johns got their campaign up and running with a seven-wicket win at Winton seconds.
