BURY are set to complete the signing of former Wigan defender Leon Barnett to replace the departed Peter Clarke.

Clarke joined neighbours Oldham Athletic earlier today on a one-year deal and terms were then agreed to bring in a new centre-half.

Barnett once commanded a fee of £2.5million to prise him away from Luton in 2007 but the 30-year-old has since spent time at Norwich, Cardiff and Wigan.

Speaking of the impending new signing, manager David Flitcroft said: “We are able to replace Peter (Clarke) and expect to complete the signing of Leon Barnett at some point this week.

“All terms have been agreed we are just waiting on ratification from the FA.

“Leon is a player of Championship quality and it is a great deal we have got for this club.”

Although delighted with his new capture, Flitcroft reserved praise for his former defender Clarke.

“We had a meeting at the end of the season looking closely at who the big earners on big wages were.

"As I have said before all of our players are available for sale and Peter attracted a lot of interest given his performances last season.

“Oldham wanted him so we had to make the best decision for this football club. We got a good deal and we see it as one in one out.

“I would like to thank Peter for all his hard work and wish him all the best in his future where I'm sure he will continue to be successful.”
