BURY ended a club-record run of 12 straight league defeats after earning a goalless draw at in-form Fleetwood.

Their first point since September moved them out of the League One relegation places on goal difference and followed a first clean sheet in 25 matches.

Bury head coach Chris Brass sprung a huge shock by naming former goalkeeper Rob Lainton in the starting line-up.

The 27-year-old had not played a competitive match in over 14 months – but the shot-stopper has resigned for the Shakers on a short-term deal.

However, top goalscorer James Vaughan missed the trip through injury, and a late change meant Niall Maher, who was set to start, withdrew from the squad and 16-year-old Callum Styles was handed his full debut.

Even with four teenagers in their starting line up Bury controlled the first half, but failed to create any clear-cut opportunities.

Lainton was forced to make a routine stop early on from David Ball but he made easy pickings of the forward’s effort.

Styles found a pocket of space midway through the half and after a great run from deep his shot was blocked by a recovering defender.

Scott Burgess was pulling the strings down the right-hand side of midfield with a number of superb deliveries into the penalty area but the Shakers went into the break goalless.

The tight encounter continued in the second period until George Miller burst into life and beat Cian Bolger before rifling a low drive towards goal, forcing Alex Cairns into a superb save down to his left.

Straight from the resulting clearance the Cod Army created an opening but David Ball lifted Ashley Hunter’s cut-back over the bar.

Returning Lainton had to be at his best when he made a fine reaction save from Bolger six yards out as the game drew to a nervy finale.

Miller latched on to Antony Kay’s long clearance nine minutes from time but again Cairns was there to deny the 18 year old.

Bobby Glendon hit the post with a curling free kick late on which looked destined for the bottom corner, but the Shakers dug deep to secure the vital point.
