UNCERTAINTY remains over Danny Mayor’s return from injury after the winger was hit with another setback.

The 26-year-old midfielder has played just 45 minutes of football since the turn of the year after suffering an abdominal injury against Bristol Rovers in December.

It was thought keyhole surgery last month had cured the stomach pain, but after attempting to join in with a training session last week the former Preston man “broke down” once again.

“He trained with us for the first time and he has broken down again,” manager Lee Clark told the Bury Times.

“We are taking one step forward and two steps back. We need to clarify what his situation is and if there’s a time frame to it.

“It’s a hammer blow. We have got to look after Danny and get this right for him because he’s deeply frustrated by it all.”

Clark named Mayor as a substitute against Coventry last week despite the winger not having trained under him.

But the Bury boss is now concerned the winger’s recovery has gone back to square one.

“At the minute we are going around in circles,” Clark added. “I’m frustrated by it so poor Danny must be deeply frustrated by it.

“I put him on the bench in midweek (against Coventry) without him training with the group.

“He just loves football, he wants to be on the pitch, our fans want to see him on the pitch, I want to see him on the pitch.

“We have got to look into it more deeply and think 'do we go for a second opinion or go for a specialist' because you cannot have one of your best players, if not your best player, not even getting through a training session, which he hasn’t done since I became manager.”
