BURY clipped the wings of the Owls at Gigg Lane with a performance that underlined their belief that they are more than just making up the numbers in League One this season.

Sheffield Wednesday, not long out of the Premier League, were the latest team to come a cropper against the sublime Shakers as Ryan Lowe and Damien Mozika netted first- half goals. Gary Megson’s men were second best in every department as the newly-promoted hosts picked up their first league victory of the new season.

Bury got off to a dream start when David Worrall whipped in a glorious cross from the right and Lowe was on hand to head home.

It was all one-way traffic and, such was the Shakers’ dominance, Megson was forced to sacrifice striker Chris O’Grady on 28 minutes to bring on an extra defender.

So it was no surprise when the hosts doubled their lead after 40 minutes as, once again, Worrall was the provider for Mozika to charge through and slot home.

With more than 5,000 supporters packed into Gigg Lane, it was turning into an evening to remember.

But, just two minutes into the second half, the Owls pulled one back when David Prutton burst through from midfield and passed to Chris Sedgwick, who curled a spectacular shot into the roof of the net.

The match became stretched with Bury having a number of strong penalty shouts turned down by referee Colin Webster.

Meanwhile, Mozika was in the same sort of inspired form that has seen the scouts flooding through the turnstiles in recent weeks and his 25-yard piledriver flashed just inches wide of the post.

Wednesday poured forward in search of a late leveller but Bury hung on and might even have made victory even more convincing but for Richard O’Donnell’s fantastic save from an inspired Lowe.
