Shakers plan for next campaign

BURY chairman Brian Fenton has revealed plans to strengthen the Shakers squad for next season ahead of the penultimate match of the current campaign – Saturday’s derby clash with Oldham.

Hailing Saturday’s 4-2 win at Notts County, which guaranteed League One football at Gigg Lane season, Fenton said he always believed there was enough quality in the squad to stay up following last year’s promotion.

And the Bury chief also said sacking manager Richie Barker as his team endured a post-Christmas run of 13 matches without a win while slipping into relegation danger had never been on the board’s agenda.

“It was a fantastic result on Saturday,” he said. “We thoroughly deserved the victory against a team pushing for the last play-off place.

“We have got it back together after a bit of a stutter after Christmas, but there were a lot of injuries in midfield and there was also Peter Sweeney’s three-match ban. But that comes with having a small squad.

“Richie has had the board’s backing all season. I’m not one for sacking managers because of a bad run.

“You can see how well we’ve done when you look at the situation Rochdale (bottom of League One and relegated) and Macclesfield (bottom of League Two) find themselves in. But I always knew we had the quality in the squad to get us out of the situation we found ourselves in a few weeks ago. The irony is that by the time the season finishes we could be as high as 10th in the league.

“We do have irons in the fire for next season and we know where we want to strengthen the team.”

The only fly in the ointment of a campaign, already described by Barker and his captain Steven Schumacher as surpassing last season’s promotion from League Two, has been the manager’s frustration with a small section of home fans who vented their spleen during the recent poor run of results, prompting him to say some supporters should not go to Gigg Lane, if they are going to be negative.

“Perhaps Richie shouldn’t have done what he did,” said Fenton. “We have spoken about it, but, at the end of the day, I would like the fans to get behind the team, because booing and criticism from the terraces doesn’t do any good.

“They have to remember that we have a small budget and a small squad.

Meanwhile, Bury will meanwhile be pressing ahead with reburbishments to the home dressing room, relaying the training ground pitch and installing a sprinkler system for the Gigg Lane pitch during the summer.

This problem with the annoying minority of moaners and groaners at our club needs nipping in the bud.Perhaps Saturday might be the right time to make an announcement to the guilty parties to put up or shut up.The club will be using this day to honour all of the supporters and former employers who have worked for the club and sadly passed away in the past season which is a wonderful tribute.Unlike Mr.Fenton i think Richie has a right to his opinion on telling the boo boys to stay away from our club.He (Mr.Fenton) is obviously only looking at the financial perspective of losing these ignorant louts as paying customers.

RUBBISH- It doesnt matter if his point is right or not! you cannot turn round and give your own fans the v sign and shout swearing words, especially with children in the stand,a complete lack of professionalism on Barkers behalf! would you get any other manager behaving like that? NOOOO

I wonder what "words" of encouragement these numbnut fans are shouting at Richie in the 1st place throughout the game to make him react like that (if that's what he did). I agree though, it is unproffessional to react that way, but i also agree they should stay at home if all they do is moan.
We all get frustrated at times during the season (i have done every season since 1980), but shouting abuse at the players and manager doesn't help anyone, there's a time and place to do that and during the game definately isn't it.
Glad to hear the board backed Richie through the tough times this season, let's hope we can build a steady ship and progress onwards now. The loan players we've mentioned need signing (if possible) and a couple of new faces added to those should stand us in good stead.

The chaiman's comment really sum it all up nicely "PERHAPS RICHIE SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE WHAT HE DID".So we presume there must have been some serious altercations going on.If Belford has left our club due to similar issues with the fans then i'm affraid Richie's days may be numbered too.I agree with Picken that if he has stuck two fingers up at the fans even through provocation by these fans then there is no place for it at our club. However i do think that the stewards and other fans should have acted to remove these idiots. It's obvious that they are an unwanted minority who will be to the detriment of our team on the field of play.Perhaps Pickin had a better view of these unsavoury exchanges while he himself was giving the grief along with his cronies towards our manager and team.Football grounds are notorious for bad language so if you don't want your kids to hear this agricultural language then please keep them away.

It seems to me that Barker is far too thin skinned and sensitive to make a go of football management long term.Presumbably the abuse aimed at him from the main stand happened during the thirteen match run without a win.Whilst this drought was going on, every Bury fan I spoke to agreed that the only way out of the mess was to be bold and play two up front. The change in tactics finally happened three matches ago, surprise surprise all three have been won with nine goals scored.Have you ever thought Richie that the fans might have been right all along?

Nomoresurfin makes some good points here.I agree that barker's negative tactics did impact on the team and no wonder we went on such a horrible run losing in such disgraceful circumstances losing 3 games by 4-1 margains. That is too much for any supporter to suffer.I mean we even equalled a pre- second world war record with that little stat. The problem with our club is that at home if there are any boo boys in the ground you are more likely to hear them than if we were playing in front of 5000 plus fans like tomorrow.Let's hope we can nip this problem in the bud and the lads put on a good show against "I TOLD E'M OLDHAM'S MOB TOMOZ.".Was really pleased to read that we have signed up Carra for another season,he's a class player.
