BURY chairman Brian Fenton is urging armchair fans to roar on the Shakers from the terraces after freezing season ticket prices.

While the Gigg Lane outfit enjoyed a boost in attendances in their first season in League One for nine years, the chairman believes there is still room for improvement.

“Our average gate last season was 3,600,” said Fenton.

“When you bear in mind that we’ve had Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield, all those big teams were coming down and equalling our support.”

The concern is that with two of the big three Yorkshire clubs earning promotion, Bury will not be able to rely on large travelling support to boost the gate.

Yet with ticket prices frozen and Richie Barker’s side playing flowing, attractive football, Fenton believes there is plenty to tempt dormant support back to Gigg Lane.

“If I’m honest, I don’t think the level of home support has been what we would have liked it to have been, especially since we enjoyed some of the best days in the club’s recent history last season,” said the chairman.

“We thought we might get an average of 4,000, but it’s not easy competing with all the clubs in the North West.

“We also understand that the way things are with the economy, perhaps people can’t afford to come every week, but season ticket sales have been strong so we’re hopeful things may improve next season.”

Season ticket prices remain at £260 for adults, £60 for under-16s and £25 for children aged under 11, while under-fives can watch for free.
