Radcliffe Borough’s assistant manager Paul McGuire expressed his disappointment after seeing his much-improved side’s game at Cammell Laird postponed on Saturday.

Boro had been looking to build on their new- found form after securing their sixth league win of the season with a 4-0 victory over fellow strugglers New Mills last weekend – a result which lifted them out of the Evo-Stik League Division One North relegation zone.

McGuire said: “From a form point of view this was the very worst time to have a game called off. It was disappointing but every game in our league was off, so it wasn’t a surprise. “It’s a bit of a shame as we wanted to play. The lads were in good spirits and looking forward to it,” he said. With Cammell Laird sitting comfortably in mid-table, a confident McGuire was hoping for another victory.

“Cammell Laird are only a few places above us in the league, so it was definitely a winnable game for us."

With the weather causing further disruption to the football league programme, McGuire is well aware of the impact of playing too many games in a short space of time could have on his side’s survival chances.

He said: “I think it’s a bit of a concern, although it can act as a double edged sword. “If you can get a good run going with continuity and hit some good form then playing Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday can be a real benefit and you can pick up a lot of points.

“Obviously that relies on keeping everyone fit and in good form. I don’t see it as a big problem, but it is a test.” McGuire is impressed with the current crop of players at his disposal.

He said: “The squad is a lot slicker now. There are 14 or 15 players here all fighting for a place.

“Collectively across the board we are a good team at this level.

“I think midfielder Danny White has proved he can influence a game and Chris Thompson brings a lot of class and composure to the forward line too.”

Boro should have a fully fit squad to pick from as they bid to claim back-to-back victories for the first time since November at Darlington on Saturday. “Thompson was unwell on Saturday and was a doubt to start.

“It may have been a blessing in disguise that the game was called off, as we would have had to reshuffle the team a bit, which would have disrupted our game plan.

“Darlington are a good team and will bring a couple of hundred fans down with them, so it should be a lively game.”

Boro have rearranged five of their league fixtures. They will play host to Prescot Cables on Tuesday, March 18, kick off 7.45pm. Lancaster City visit on Saturday, March 22 (3pm) and Padiham will head to Stainton Park on Tuesday, April 8 (7.45pm). Boro’s away match with Cammell Laird will now take place on Tuesday, March 25, kick off 7.45pm and Boro will head to Ossett Albion on Saturday, April 12, kick off 3pm.
