Simon Carden nets late winner for Radcliffe Borough

Borough, who are now three points clear of the relegation places, started the better of the teams with Brad Robinson intercepting a poor back pass. However, his weak shot did not trouble former Radcliffe keeper Paul Horridge. On 15 minutes, Bevan Burey, who never stopped running all game, made a great run down the left and found himself one-on-one with Horridge who pulled off a great save.

Clitheroe gave Radcliffe a scare five minutes later when Ross Dent found himself unmarked on the edge of the box but thankfully he headed wide.

Borough kept up the pressure and good work by Danny Lafferty down the right put Burey through but his shot slammed against the crossbar with Horridge beaten.

The Clitheroe keeper made another great save on 34 minutes to deny Borough the opening goal. Elliot Rokka, pictured, played a good ball to Burey who raced past the Clitheroe defenders into the penalty area but was met by Horridge, who denied him once again to keep the scores level at the break.

Two minutes into the second half, Dave Sherlock almost opened the scoring for Radcliffe when his speculative effort beat Horridge but hit the post. A minute later Clitheroe’s Jordan Preston raced into the Radcliffe penalty area but Chris Cheetham’s full length save denied him the opening goal.

With 15 minutes remaining, Simon Carden replaced Robinson and Rokka headed the ball wide after a cross from the industrious Burey. At the other end, Cheetham made a superb double save with just seven minutes left to keep Radcliffe in the game.

With three minutes of the match left, Clitheroe keeper Horridge spilled the ball after a challenge by Burey. The ball fell to Carden on the edge of the box, who calmly chipped the ball into the Clitheroe net. Radcliffe Borough visit Darlington 1884 on Saturday and are at home to Padiham on Tuesday.
