Radcliffe Borough travelled to Burscough on Easter Monday and came away from Victory Park with a comfortable 3-1 win in Evo-Stik Division One North to avenge an earlier 2-1 defeat in this season’s FA cup, writes Alan Firth.

Radcliffe forced a succession of corners in the opening minutes and Danny Lafferty went close to opening the scoring when his header flew over the bar from a Dave Sherlock corner. A minute later Bevan Burey had a great chance but his shot went over the bar after confusion in the Burscough defence.

On the half hour, Sam Grimshaw’s corner found Danny Lafferty and his goal-bound header was deliberately handled by Burscough’s Phil Quirk, leaving the referee no option but to send off Quirk and award Radcliffe a penalty. Brad Robinson made no mistake from the spot to give Boro the lead.

Radcliffe kept up the pressure and on 34 minutes Sherlock swung in a free-kick from the left which was met by Danny Lafferty’s head to double the lead.

With five minutes of the first half remaining, a Dave Sherlock corner on the right found James Mullineux who headed home to give Radcliffe a 3-0 lead at the break.

Very few chances were created in the second half due to the strong swirling winds and uneven pitch which saw Brad Robinson limp off to be replaced by Chris Thompson.

Radcliffe keeper Chris Cheetham made a good save from Jack Laird but couldn’t do anything about Burscough’s only goal of the game. Jordan Williams was left unmarked to head home from a corner with four minutes left on the clock.

On Saturday, Boro conceded two first half goals from Alistair Waddecar and Alex Taylor to lose against promotion-chasing Bamber Bridge at Stainton Park.

Boro are at home to Kendal Town in their final league match of the season on Saturday.
