A SAM Grimshaw double helped wipe out the memory of a 2-1 defeat at Brighouse Town on the opening day and secure Boro’s first win of the Evo-Stik Division One North campaign.

The home side broke the deadlock on 27 minutes when, after being brought down in the box, Chris Mason stepped up to score the resulting penalty – making it two goals in as many games following his strike at Brighouse.

Three minutes later Prescot keeper Gibson came rushing out of his box to clear the ball with a header. His clearance fell to the feet of Grimshaw who calmly hit the ball first time into the net from 35 yards.

Mason saw a couple of chances to extend the lead sail over the bar as Boro continued to put Prescot under pressure.

The striker picked up in the second half where he left off in the first with a strong run into the penalty area, but his shot went straight into the arms of the keeper.

Bevan Burey blazed over from just inside the penalty area with 20 minutes to go after good work from Grimshaw.

But Prescot reduced the arrears after 74 minutes in controversial fashion when Chris Cheetham tipped a Sam Corlett header on to the bar, but the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line after bouncing down, despite the Boro players’ appeals to the contrary.

Two minutes later Corlett almost equalised for Prescot, but his header from six yards went just over.

But with nine minutes left Burey’s pass found Grimshaw who raced past two defenders and showed great composure to slot the ball home and make the game safe for Boro.

On Saturday, Thomas Matthews and Ryan Hall put newly-promoted Brighouse ahead before the break.

Boro went on to pepper the hosts’ goal in the closing stages of the second half, with Grimshaw hitting the bar minutes from time before Mason netted a consolation goal from the penalty spot in stoppage time.
