Radcliffe Borough keeper Chris Cheetham was the hero as he saved three penalties in a shoot-out to ensure Boro progressed to the next round of the FA Cup at the expense of Atherton Colleries on Monday.

With only five minutes played in the preliminary round replay, Boro scored through a Chris Mason penalty after a handball in the Colls penalty area.

Colls kicked downhill in the second half and put Boro under pressure and equalised on 73 minute when Mark Battersby chased a long ball and lobbed the Boro keeper.

Colls had their keeper Danny Taberner to thank for two outstanding saves from Jack Hindle and Michael McGinlay to force the game into extra time.

After two minutes of extra time, Colls took the lead when Bradley Cooke’s 30-yard shot was deflected past a helpless Cheetham.

Boro’s Dave Sherlock was shown a red card minutes after coming on as a substitute following a 50/50 tackle.

With seven minutes remaining Richard Smith came to Boro’s rescue by scoring a headed goal following a corner resulting in a penalty shoot-out.

Sam Grimshaw, Smith and Hindle made no mistake with their penalties but Thomas Hulme and Chris Mason will be grateful to Cheetham for his three penalty saves which takes Boro into the next round, away to Skelmersdale United.

l On Saturday, Danny White’s last minute penalty salvaged a 2-2 draw for the Boro, after they were almost unceremoniously dumped out of the FA Cup by Atherton Collieries.

Mark Battersby gave the Colls the lead in the eighth minute before captain Danny Lafferty headed home from a corner before half time.

Colls regained the lead on 65 minutes from a Battersby penalty after Danny Lafferty had fouled Christian Holt in the area before White converted Boro’s penalty late on as Thomas Hulme was brought down in the area by former Boro player Andy Heald.
