Although pleased with Radcliffe Borough’s impressive start to the season, manager Paul McGuire believes his side’s inability to kill off opponents could cost them against the bigger clubs in the league this season.

Unbeaten in their last six games, the Evo-Stik Division One North team are becoming the score-draw specialists after four consecutive stalemates in both league and cup.

The Stainton Park men, who are eighth in the table, conceded an stoppage-time equaliser in their 2-2 draw at New Mills on Monday and were unable to find a winner against 10-man Ossett Town on Saturday, with the game ending 1-1.

“It’s now six games on the bounce undefeated, so we’ve got a little run going and we are looking good,” said McGuire.

“However, we probably need to start scoring more, especially when we are on top in games.

“We’ve had a few matches recently where we could have been two or three goals to the good, but we haven’t taken our chances and that will get punished, especially against the top sides in the division.”

“We are a tough team to play against, we are no pushovers but we do need to start hurting teams.

“It’s disappointing to concede in the second minute of injury time but that’s football and as long as we are playing well and picking up points we can live with that.”

A player who has really caught McGuire’s eye this season is youngster Sam Grimshaw.

The midfielder was Boro’s man-of-the-match against Ossett Town and, in the absence of Danny White, also performed well in a less familiar left-back role against New Mills.

“Sam was a real live wire on Saturday,” said McGuire.

“He’s a very versatile player and has certainly impressed me so far this season.

“He played wide-right against Ossett and that meant he had the pace to come in on his left foot, hit shots and play through balls.

“It was a shame we had to move him to left-back at New Mills due to the absence of Danny White because we lost a bit of our attacking prowess and threat.

“Despite that he had another good game as did young defender Richard Smith, who blocked every shot and won all of his headers. He’s been a revelation.”

The Boro return to FA Cup action on Saturday when they travel to Evo-Stik Premier Division leaders Skelmersdale United for their first round qualifier.

The higher-ranked league side are unbeaten in eight maches and are three points clear at the top of the table.

“They will obviously be looking at beating us on their own patch but I think we will make a good account of ourselves,” said McGuire.

“I’m sure we won’t be a pushover. Maybe it’s time for us to do a bit of a comeback and turn the screw on other teams.”
