RADCLIFFE Borough boss Danny Johnson is hoping the attractive brand of football he is trying to instil in his players will soon be reflected in the stands at the Belvoir Stadium.

Boro won their second consecutive league game by demolishing Ossett Town 4-0 at home on Saturday – with goals from Tom Hulme, Richard Smith, Steve Foster and Matt Landregan – to climb up to 17th place in Evo-Stik League First Division North.

But with only 83 spectators cheering the cash-strapped club to victory, Johnson is calling on the local community to unite and offer their support as the club looks to build a better future.

“Financially we are struggling and we need more people to come through the turnstiles on matchdays,” he told the Radcliffe Times.

“The chairman (Bernard Manning Jnr) and myself are at the start of a five-year development plan at the club.

“The aim is to build a team that’s capable of playing a nice brand of football that will encourage more people to come and watch us.

“When you hit a score like 4-0, hopefully that will put an extra three or four bottoms on seats for the next home game.

“I want to put the smiles back on the faces of everyone associated with Radcliffe Borough.”

Although the goalscorers will take the accolades for the success against Ossett Town, the brilliant display from the defence provided the platform for Boro’s best performance of the season. And after Boro lost all five of their opening fixtures, Johnson is delighted with the club’s second clean sheet on the bounce.

“We knew once we got one win, a number of wins would follow,” he said.

“We are a solid unit and defensively we are looking strong. I only see us going from strength to strength.”

“In the last couple of seasons there has been a lot of weight placed on the young shoulders of goalkeeper Chris Cheetham but now the back line of Jamie Forbes, Kevin McGrath, Aaron Walters and Chris Middleton are protecting him.

“The average height of our defence is 6’2” now in comparison to last year when Danny Lafferty was our tallest defender at 5’11”.

“Smith and Nathan Valentine have shored up midfield and Matty Davies, Hulme, Sam McMahon and Foster have all chipped in with goals.”

Boro entertain sixth-placed Brighouse Town at the Belvoir Stadium on Saturday, with Johnson looking to keep up the winning momentum.

“They are fourth in the league and have started the season well.

“Our defence will need to be on their guard because we want to go unbeaten for as long as we can.”
