THERE is more to come from Elliot Rokka, according to Radcliffe Borough boss Joe Gibbons, after the young winger was named Evo-Stik First Division North’s young player of the year.

Rokka was also second in the league’s fans’ player of the year vote after firing in 16 goals, despite Boro battling against relegation.

The 21-year-old midfielder was dubbed Boro’s Jermain Defoe by previous boss Bill Prendergast, in recognition of his goal-scoring exploits in a struggling side.

Gibbons is confident that his young star can shine at a higher level, but says he still has things to work on before making that step up.

“I have had quite a few chats with Elliot about the things he can develop in his game,” said Gibbons.

“It seems strange to say for a young lad who has had such a good season, but I don’t think the fans have seen him reach his full potential just yet.

“There is still more to come from Elliot in terms of consistency.

“I think he could have had even more goals this season. In many games he was the star, but occasionally he would not have the same kind of impact. If he can produce the levels week in, week out then the sky is the limit for the lad.”

Gibbons is hopeful to be given the chance to continue working with Rokka next season as permanent boss, and confirmed he would sit down to discuss his future with the chairman after Saturday’s final match of the season at home to Prescot.

Boro go into that game 19th in the table after losing heavily to Brighouse (3-0) on Saturday and at Ramsbottom United (4-0) on Monday. Turn to page 67 for full reports.
