RADCLIFFE ended the season in the best possible way as they won 1-0 at play-off final-bound Prescot Cables on the final day.

Louis Myers’ lob was enough for Jon Macken’s side to collect all three points as they punished a wasteful Cables side who are to face Bamber Bridge in the play-off final, the win confirming Boro’s 20th-place finish in the process.

Both sides started brightly enough but it was Boro who had the best of the early opportunities.

Liam Wood and Kingsley Williams both squandered chances to take an early lead.

Reece Fishwick had the best chances for Prescot but he lacked the necessary composure to score.

Radcliffe continued to dominate the half, with continued pressure putting Prescot on the back foot.

Williams had another chance midway through the half but blazed over the bar.

Myers also had a huge opportunity to break the deadlock but he could not keep his header down.

However, on 29 minutes Myers did get the game’s only goal as he lobbed onrushing keeper Marcus Burgess to give Boro a well-deserved lead.

In the second half both sides continued to create openings.

Jimmy Daniels had a huge chance to double Boro’s lead on 52 minutes but he fired high.

Then, Rick Smith was Boro’s saviour when he blocked a shot during a good spell of pressure from Prescot.

Cables continued to waste opportunities as the final whistle loomed but they could not find a way past Connor Keane in the Radcliffe goal.

Boro centre-back Callum Grogan was sent off late in the game for his challenge on a Cables striker but Radcliffe were able to see out their final-day victory.
