THIS game was remarkable for some outstanding goalkeeping by Shane Bland in the Whitby nets, a level of wastefulness in front of goal by the Rams that would leave a Russian oligarch shamefaced and last but not least Jon Robinson’s 100th goal for the club.

The Rams set off where they had left off on Saturday against Buxton, all sharpness, speed and zip around the box.

They could have been two up in the first few minutes if not denied by Bland, but he found himself beaten after seven minutes.

Jordan Hulme received Phil Dean’s low cross with his back to goal on the penalty spot, before turning smartly and shooting low into the corner.

The visitors were finding Hulme just too hot to handle and could barely get their foot to the ball apart from desperate clearances and flying saves.

And when McTiernan was sent off after 25 minutes for throwing his arm into the face of Gary Stopforth, the home crowd expected a goal deluge which did not materialise.

The Rams grew complacent and sloppy and Whitby, to their credit, refused to capitulate.

The second half started slowly but then there was a crazy 25 minutes in which the Rams managed to spurn more chances than Imelda Marcos had pairs of shoes, even shooting wide of a gaping net or just close enough to Bland to allow him to pull off save after save.

It was poetic justice that when the dam finally burst with 15 minutes left, it was by way of a own goal.

Bullock turned in Hulme’s low cross, which might otherwise have evaded the Rams attackers.

Two minutes later, Dean collected the ball on the edge of the box and shot low across Bland into the corner.

Finally, in added time, substitute Robinson won the ball 25 yards out and wriggled his way into the box, the tackle that brought him down was inevitable as was Robinson’s subsequent dispatching of the spot-kick.

Low into the centre of the net it went for his 100th goal in 152 appearances – fittingly the last kick of the match.

A second-half penalty from Osebi Abadaki and a late strike from Phil Dean helped the Rams secure a 2-0 home win against Buxton on Saturday.

This weekend, the Rams are away to Marine in a rearranged match.

However, the Premier Division side will be without in-form duo Cedric Krou and Scott Burton, who are both serving suspensions.
