RAMSBOTTOM United were unable to build on a promising opening-day victory at home to AFC Goole, going down 2-1 at Kendal Town on Tuesday night.

A Darren Green double and opener from Nia Bayunu were enough to secure Rammy a 3-1 victory in front of their home fans on Saturday and kick off the Evo-Stik League First Division North season in style.

And a good contingent of Rams supporters followed them to Cumbria for their first away trip of the season.

Sam Bailey quelled their optimism on 30 minutes, however, after putting the hosts in front with a superb strike.

He curled in a 25-yard effort from the left, the ball beating the dive of Rams' giant keeper Chris Cheetham and squeezing in just under the bar at the far post.

As the seconds ticked away before the break, a Ramsbottom raid on the home goal ended with Bayunu being shoved out of the way by a home defender, leaving the referee with little choice than to point to the spot.

Seddon took the kick and sent it low past home keeper Will Kitchen’s left hand.

The winner came on 60 minutes, when Ollie Wood was allowed the opportunity to force his way between two Rams defenders, on the left-hand side, and fire home low past Cheetham from just inside the box.

It was a far cry from the scenes at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium on Saturday.

A comfortable victory was never in doubt once one of the few remaining players from last year, Bayunu, thumped home a 10th-minute header from Alex Meaney’s corner.

Green then took control of the game, putting in a fantastic individual performance that culminated in two goals and a man-of-the-match award.

He doubled Rammy's advantage on 31 minutes, swivelling on the edge of the box before crashing the ball past Dan Morton in the visitors' goal.

Goole managed to get on the scoresheet eight minutes from time Sam Robinson poked home from close range.

But any thoughts of an unlikely comeback were extinguished two minutes later when Green raced on to a high through ball and fired low past Morton.

Rammy entertain Sheffield FC on Saturday in the preliminary round of the FA Cup, kick off 3pm.
