RYAN Salmon stole the limelight from strike partner Gareth Seddon, scoring twice as Ramsbottom United ended the season with a 2-0 win at Burscough.

Seddon announced before the match that it would be his last game before retiring from football.

But the 36-year-old front man was unable to get on the scoresheet as Salmon bagged two goals.

It was a positive end to the Evo-Stik First Division North campaign for a Rammy side that have endured a fair few ups and downs along the way.

Manager Mark Fell will be hoping to carry the momentum from the win into the summer as the club finally tries to shake off the previous season’s relegation.

After a goalless first half, Rammy finally broke the deadlock when Tom Murphy galloped forward down the left wing to send a cross fizzing across the six-yard box, that Salmon converted for his 17th goal of the season.

Burscough played their way back into the game, but as the match progressed the Rams once again assumed control.

After a period of possession they finally made it count in the 86th-minute when Salmon closed down a back pass, robbing home keeper Ben Morrow of the ball before rolling it into the empty net for his fifth goal in the last three games.

The retiring Seddon, who was unable to add to his season-tally of 13 goals, was cheered off after Lee Botham replaced him.

It remains to be seen which players will return next season when hopes will be high for a successful season and an improvement on the 14th placed finish.

The club’s awards night will take place tomorrow in the cricket club lounge from 7.30pm, with a £10 admission. It will include a pie and peas supper and a disco.
