IF the League Two season started this weekend, Bury boss David Flitcroft says he would be more than happy to kick off with his current squad after making free transfer Chris Hussey his fourth summer signing.

The 25-year-old full-back waived an automatic contract extension at Burton Albion to seal a two-year deal with the Shakers after impressing during a loan spell at the end of last season.

Hussey will resume a promising partnership with Flitcroft’s first summer signing Danny Mayor on the left after the former Sheffield Wednesday winger agreed to extend his stay at the JD Stadium following a season-long loan spell.

Throw in the return of midfielder Nicky Adams and striker Ryan Lowe and the Shakers manager is more than happy with his summer dealings so far. But the 39-year-old coach acknowledges there is always room for improvement.

“I am looking at putting together a squad of 20 and to be honest, if I couldn’t bring in any more players now, I would still be delighted with the group I have already got,” said Flitcroft.

“I’m really happy with the quality of players we’ve been able to bring in and how we are building the squad.

“We have got some really big characters in there, it’s just a case of making sure we have cover for every position. We are always looking to improve and we maybe need three or four more players to build up the squad to a level where we can be really competitive.”

Hussey will fill the defensive slot on the left, but Flitcroft still needs cover on the right and in goal, following the departure of Brian Jensen.

The Bury boss is also expected to supplement his experienced strikeforce of Lowe, Daniel Nardiello and Clive Platt, with some younger blood.

Whoever comes in to bolster the attack, Flitcroft is confident they will not be short of chances with Hussey raiding down the left.

“We have already seen, from his previous loan spell, just how much quality Huss has in the final third, in terms of his crossing and set-piece delivery, so I think he is a great acquisition,” he said.

“He has the athleticism and power to take him into some really dangerous areas, as well as a great engine, which gives him the capability of playing left midfield, wing-back or as a traditional full-back, so he gives us a lot of options.”
