KAL Naismith may have been the one that got away this summer, but David Flitcroft has been left with few regrets after landing his prized target Danny Rose.

Both forwards were at the fore of a keenly contested Lancashire derby, with Naismith opening the scoring for Accrington only for Rose to level before the break.

Another key addition, Danny Mayor, who signed from Sheffield Wednesday in May, then settled it for Bury with a sweet strike just after the hour before the home side were left to hang on with 10 men for the second consecutive Saturday.

Unlike the previous weekend’s 2-1 win against Plymouth, when Danny Nardiello limped off after Flitcroft had used his allotted three substitutions, the referee played his part in putting Bury on the back foot, as Kevin Wright sent off Jim McNulty for his second bookable offence.

But the Shakers again showed real steel and determination to carve out their second consecutive home victory and move up to sixth in the League Two table.

Flitcroft, who flung on loan signing Duane Holmes for the final 10 minutes only a few hours after sealing a four-month deal for the 19-year-old Huddersfield midfielder, confirmed after the match he had dropped any interest in Naismith.

“I think the way Accrington handled it through the press put us off, it certainly put me off,” he said, after the club’s £20,000 offer was made public.

“We tried going chairman to chairman to do it professionally and then within half an hour it was all over Sky Sports.

“We don’t do business that way.

“First half he (Naismith) was a handful and I enjoyed his performance. He is a good player but we will keep doing what we are doing and keep ticking this thing along.

“We know what we are building here - we won’t be panicking on anything or anyone.

“We do our business, we do it right, we do it professionally and we make sure we keep building a squad that can be competitive in this league.”

Naismith put the visitors in front on 19 minutes, cutting in from the right before curling a shot in off the far post.

And he went on to hit the woodwork with a 30-yard free-kick, before forcing Pablo Mills to head an attempted lob off the line in an inspired first-half display.

But Flitcroft will not be stressing he got the wrong man after Rose made it four goals in four games since signing from Barnsley.

The 20-year-old striker was in action at both ends, clearing a deflected Will Hatfield effort from under his own bar before slotting home Kelvin Etuhu’s measured pass in the 35th minute after a great back heel by Ryan Lowe in the build-up.

“Danny Rose epitomises what the club is about – that freshness, that desire, that drive going forward and he gives us that momentum we are looking for,” said Flitcroft.

“Even when we have gone down to 10 men, Danny still kept driving the team and kept closing them down and put a shift in for two men up there.

“I was delighted with Rosey’s performance.

“We have got Danny in, it was a good chase, and now he is in the building is a real asset to this football club because he will continue to score goals.

“When you work as hard as he does you will get the luck you deserve.”

Flitcroft tightened things up after the break, reverting to a flat back four after bringing on Chris Hussey at left-back to keep tabs on Naismith.

The switch successfully blunted Stanley’s cutting edge and pushed Mayor further forward, from wing-back to winger, which proved decisive as the 23-year-old bent the ball in from 25 yards to claim the match-winner on 62 minutes.

McNulty’s 71st-minute dismissal – picking up his second yellow card for a block on James Gray following an earlier tangle with the same player – made life interesting for Bury, but they always looked capable of holding the basement club at bay to claim another valuable three points.

“We have got to finish teams off and we had a good opportunity to do that but I am delighted with the way they dug in,” added Flitcroft.

“For the 20 minutes we were down to 10 men they couldn’t break our resolve and I was delighted with that.”

Star man – Danny Rose – Match-winner Danny Mayor won the man-of-the-match award in the ground and few could argue his sumptuous strike alone was worthy of the Champagne. But, while the midfielder grew into the game in the second half, Rose put in another complete performance. A fourth goal in four games extended his 100 per cent record since arriving from Barnsley, but his energy for 90 minutes was equally as impressive. Always a willing runner and first line of defence, it was telling that Ryan Lowe, rather than Rose, was the one to make way as David Flitcroft looked to sure things up in the second half. The 20-year-old certainly put in a manful effort.
