NATHAN Cameron repaid the first instalment of his new three-year contract after scoring a decisive late goal for Bury in their FA Cup first round victory over Hemel Hempstead Town.

And manager David Flitcroft expects the club’s investment in the 22-year-old defender will continue to pay dividends.

“He was unlucky on a couple of occasions (before the goal). He has come in and been quite aggressive in the box and it is something we are trying to look at,” said the Bury boss.

“We want him to be scoring more goals. I do believe he is a goalscoring centre-half from set-pieces.

“I think now he has got that one he might be able to settle down a bit and score more goals.”

Cameron, who signed from Coventry at the start of last season, scored four times in his first campaign for the club but had failed to get on the scoresheet before his 88th-minute strike on Saturday, which put Bury ahead for the first time in a tie they went on to win 3-1.

The burly centre-back showed a striker’s composure to turn sharply in the box and connect with a sweet volley from 10 yards that dissected a crowd of bodies on the line.

“Cam stood up to the test,” added Flitcroft. “It was a difficult test, but he stood up to it and embraced the game and has done well in that moment.

“When it’s gone to Cam he has composed himself and time just seemed to stop still. They couldn’t get the block on it and he’s spun on it and it’s a fantastic finish.”
