BURY lost ground on the race for automatic promotion from League Two after going down to a Phil Edwards strike at Burton Albion.
The Brewers full-back pounced on a Stuart Beavon flick-on from an Adam McGurk free kick to slot home the only goal of a tight encounter just after the hour mark.
It was tough on the Shakers who controlled possession for large periods but were unable to break down a disciplined Burton side.
Danny Nardiello came closest to scoring with a late header that Jon McLaughlin did well to tip over, while Tom Soares also had a fierce second-half shot well saved by the home stopper.
Victory moved the Brewers up a place to second, while Bury remain in seventh, but are now nine points behind Wycombe in the final automatic promotion spot.
