BURY are reportedly closing in on the signing of Port Vale striker Tom Pope.

It is understood the 29-year-old front man is undergoing a second round of talks at the JD Stadium over what is expected to be a three-year deal.

Pope, who has scored 69 goals in 196 games over four-and-a-half seasons with the Valliants, will be out of contract at the end of the month.

The Sneyd Green striker has been offered a new deal by his hometown club but at vastly reduced terms.

Pope has also attracted interest from Doncaster, although it is now understood Bury head the race to secure his signature.

David Flitcroft has refused to comment since rumours of his interest in the forward surfaced last week, rumours which were further fuelled this morning by news of the ongoing talks.

Flitcroft has already signed Wolves striker Leon Clarke and Blackpool defender Peter Clarke, both on free transfers, while he is understood to be in negotiation with Charlton over an extended deal for goalkeeper Nick Pope, who enjoyed a successful spell on loan at Bury last season.
