DANNY Rose says he would rather win points than prizes after being nominated by his coaches at Bury in the Rising Star category of the North West Football Awards.

The 21-year-old former Barnsley striker scored 10 goals in 41 appearances last season after moving from Oakwell in August, 2014, and has bagged two goals in the last two league games this campaign.

He has not been a regular starter, though, and is more worried about staking a claim for a place in the senior side and helping push them up the table than earning gongs.

“It’s always nice to be up for awards but I would have rather taken three points at Crewe,” said Rose, who replaced the injured Leon Clarke in the starting line-up for the 3-3 draw at Gresty Road.

As well as scoring Bury’s third on Saturday he also set up Tom Soares for a goal and worked well with strike partner Tom Pope.

“You have got to work hard to stay at this level,” he added, after dropping down from the third tier when he signed for the Shakers.

“I only played one game in League One last season for Barnsley.

“I was a League Two player last season and now I am going to have to step up and become a League One player.

“But we will have to see how that goes because we have got some good strikers here.

“We have got Pope, Clarke and Hall (Hallam Hope), and we have got Nards (Danny Nardiello) and Lowey (Ryan Lowe) to come back (from injury). They got 10 goals each last season and I am sure they will do the same this season so there is competition.”

Rose started the season on the bench and got his first minutes on the pitch in the defeat at home to Fleetwood, coming on to score a late consolation goal, before starting at Crewe.

He has struggled at times to complete the full 90 minutes since joining Bury and after a stop-start pre-season campaign was unable to go the distance again on Saturday.

“I think it was before the goal that I signalled over to the bench that I’d got cramp,” he said, disappointed that he was unable to help his team-mates see the game through after putting them 3-2 up before being subbed on 66 minutes.

“Luckily enough I scored and then afterwards I blew up.

“After I came off we had some control so it was a bit disappointing not to win.”

Bury captain Nathan Cameron has also been nominated in the North West Football Awards, beating Danny Mayor to the club’s nomination for League Two player of the last season.
