BURY’S army of attacking talent can only be a good thing for the club, according to frontman Ryan Lowe, who made a long-awaiting return from injury on Saturday.

The 36-year-old Liverpudlian is one of six senior strikers on the books of the newly promoted League One outfit.

And while he admitted to a certain amount of trepidation as manager David Flitcroft unveiled summer signings Leon Clarke and Tom Pope, Lowe believes the competition for places could be the difference in their bid for survival this season.

“I was the same (as the fans) thinking six strikers, where do I fit in?” said Lowe, who is vying for a place in the side along with fellow strikers Clarke, Pope, Danny Rose, Hallam Hope and Danny Nardiello.

His fight for a place was made all the harder after suffering ankle ligament damage playing against Accrington in pre-season and his return was twice curtailed by calf injuries.

Fellow forwards Clarke and Nardiello have also been out injured, yet Bury have still been able to field a decent attacking line-up and have scored 13 goals in the first seven games of the campaign.

“It’s football – the more strikers you have the better and it’s paying dividends for us now that Clarkey’s injured and Nards is injured," said Lowe.

"On Saturday Rosey and Popey played, with me coming on and Hallam on the bench, so we need them.

“If other clubs pick up injuries and we are fortunate enough to have so many top class strikers at the football club then it will benefit us.

“There will be goals in there because we have got some quality players in the side.

“It’s up to me to battle away and hopefully when I am back 100 per cent fit I can sneak myself back in the starting IX.

“But with the strikers we have got at this football club you have got to bide your time and when you get your chance you have got to take it.”

Lowe may be worried about his own place in the side, but he is not concerned that such a packed forward line will struggle to gel.

“I played with Popey before at Crewe, so I know what he’s all about and I know what Clarkey’s all about,” he added.

“When you have got good strikers, good strikers will link up anyway, you just seem to click quite quickly, so the more you’ve got, the better it is for the team.”
