DAVID Flitcroft is hoping for a glittering third-round tie against Premier League opposition when the FA Cup draw is made this evening.

His Bury side knocked Rochdale out of the second round with a 1-0 win at Spotland yesterday, which followed up a first-round victory over the 2013 champions Wigan.

And if he would be allowed to hand-pick his own opponent, there would be no doubt in the manager's mind who it would be.

“It is quiet obvious to say the big boys, it really is, and you'd love to draw Man United, I really would love to draw them and take the supporters over there, it would be fantastic,” he said.

“I always think we are going to get a big club and we never do and I always like it to come out right, but it never does.

“I love this FA Cup and I dream about it. I want a big club, but I just seem to miss them.

“We'll take what comes and be grateful that we are in it, that's the biggest thing.”

It was the inspirational Danny Rose who nodded the only goal in the victory over local rivals Rochdale when he sprang highest to head home Chris Hussey's corner.

Flitcroft's decision to revert back to his tried and tested 4-4-2 formation allowed the young striker to partner Leon Clarke up front, which enabled the visitors to press higher up the pitch.

Hussey's wand of a left foot caused all sorts of problems to the hosts from set-pieces, as Leon Clarke almost converted one corner but was denied by a terrific Joel Castro Pereira save, before Peter Clarke had a header controversially ruled out for a push by Tom Soares from another.

For all of the Shakers' chances the game remained wide open and they had their on-loan goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann to thank as he produced a number of fine saves to deny Ian Henderson on the stroke of half-time.

The intensity dropped in the second period as the visitors pushed for the elusive equaliser, but it was Bury who came the closest to sealing the win as Tom Soares slid Leon Clarke through on goal and the forward slotted the ball home, only to be denied by the offside flag.

The Shakers showed strict defensive structure and high concentration levels to see the game out, backed by more than 2,000 travelling supporters.

“The following was incredible. I wasn't surprised when I came out but just to see the wall of fans in front of you and not behind the goal was outstanding," added Flitcroft.

“We purposely let the lads go up to them in the warm up and they all came in and said 'look boss it's electric out there, it really is' and that really gave me my team talk to try and get that start that we needed.

“We had to get a fast start against these (Rochdale). We had to get them on the back foot.

"They are a team full of energy, a team full of young players, dynamic players and we had to take them away from that front-foot performance.

“I am delighted about being in the next round and it is about the fans.

"The FA Cup is about the fans, it always will be.”

Bury will go into the hat for the third-round draw as ball number 55. The draw will be shown live on BBC Two from 7pm.
