BURY boss David Flitcroft has set his side fresh targets for the remainder of the season after effectively assuring League One football with Saturday's 1-0 victory at home to Doncaster.

Fourth-bottom Blackpool are still mathematically within reach, nine points behind the Shakers, in 15th, with four games remaining.

But there are enough other teams between them to rule out relegation.

Now Flitcroft wants his players to head to Swindon on Saturday intent on ending a run of six away games without a victory, and is also eager to climb into the top half of the table before the end of the campaign.

“I want that win,” said Flitcroft, whose side have only won one league game on their travels in their last 14 attempts.

“The players want that win and we will be doing everything in our power this week to try to get it for the away fans, who have suffered a little bit this season.

“We have not been good enough away from home but we have put that right of late (following recent draws at Blackpool and Burton Albion)

“We have turned the away form, there is no doubt about that.

“I've said in the past that as a manager and coach I have not respected the point at times and it's led to a poor run away from home.

“We got the point at Blackpool in a hard-fought game and then we were completely the better side against Burton so we have broken that duck, we feel, but there will be no complacency on Saturday.”

Bury leapfrogged Swindon in the table following Saturday's victory over Doncaster.

And now Flitcroft has his sights firmly set on those teams above him in the league table as he targets a top-half finish and bettering the club's previous points tally when they avoided relegation from League One – 56 points in 2011/12, when they finished 14th.

He said: “We will keep trying to drive and strive and we have still got Coventry (11th) above us that we can catch, we have got teams up there that we can catch.

“We will keep trying to get some points on the board.

“Consolidation is about us trying to work out where we are in this league, who we are and where we need to get to next season.

“I'm not sure of the points total the last time we were in League One but I certainly want to go past that and better that.

“We have got a lot of work to do at this football club but we are not scared of that. We are not shy of work and certainly the chairman isn't.”

Meanwhile, Bury were dealt a bitter blow last week when it was confirmed goalkeeper Rob Lainton would probably be out for the remainder of the season after suffering a further setback in his recovery from a groin injury.

"I think he will be out now,” Flitcroft said. “It's his groin area again that has just tightened up. He got to about 20 metres in his kicking.

“Distribution is so important for any keeper and he is just struggling every time he kicks the ball, so probably at least four weeks out.”
