BURY are set to turn their attention to recruiting a goalkeeper after strengthening their defensive ranks with the signing of centre-back Antony Kay.

Former Rochdale and Burnley stopper Matt Gilks has been attracting interest from a number of League One clubs – including Bury – as the Shakers, who have no senior goalkeeper at the club, search for a new number one.

But while signing a new stopper tops Bury's list of priorities, it is not clear if Gilks fits the bill.

The club completed their first signing of the summer on Sunday as Kay penned a two-year deal at Gigg Lane.

The 33-year-old central defender, who was released from MK Dons at the end of last season, will bolster a Shakers defence that was the fourth-worst in League One last season.

Bury conceded 73 goals in the league last term and manager David Flitcroft wants the experienced Kay to help resolve those problems.

He said: “Antony is a player we have been pursuing for the last six months and I am absolutely delighted to reveal him as our first summer signing and have his signature on a contract for Bury FC.

“We have been working on securing his services since Christmas, he is a player of great character and has the leadership qualities required to reduce our goals conceded stats for next season.”

Kay, who can also play in centre-midfield, has made over 500 career appearances and has experienced promotion from League One with Barnsley, Huddersfield and MK Dons.

He played 34 times in the second tier last year as Karl Robinson's men were relegated back to League One.
