DANNY Mayor’s road to recovery is almost at an end as he continues to sacrifice his summer holidays to get fit for pre-season.

The Bury winger has been ever-present, along with Zeli Ismail and Nathan Cameron, at the club’s Carrington training complex in a bid to overcome a pelvic injury which ruled him out for most of last season.

And after the Shakers this week confirmed their pre-season schedule kicks off at home to former Premier League side Sunderland on Friday, July 7, Mayor has never been keener to get going again.

“Summer has not been too bad,” Mayor told Bury Times. “I’ve been going into the club to do some work with the physio.

“It’s just been me and the lads that need it – Zeli (Ismail) and Nathan Cameron. My injury isn’t too bad now. We had a couple of setbacks but we’re on the right road to recovery.

“I’m hoping to be ready for when all the lads get back on June 26 and for when we play Sunderland, who have just dropped from the Premier League.

“All players want to test themselves against the best and we have a chance to do that.”

Mayor says he has been impressed by the quality of signings brought in by boss Lee Clark so far.

“The new signings have been brilliant,” he added. “The gaffer is building a really strong squad. All of the signings are brilliant but (Jermaine) Beckford is a big name with lots of Championship experience. Stephen Dawson is also a great signing.

“We played against him a few times last year and to be able to pull him away from Scunthorpe is a credit to where the gaffer wants to take us and the ambition for this season.”
