A ROBBER who got his unsuspecting grandma to take him back to his getaway vehicle to collect stolen cash has been jailed.

Declan Lloyd, 21, of South Radford Street, Salford, was found guilty of robbery following a trial at Manchester Crown Court on Friday and was sentenced to four years in prison.

At 2.35pm on Tuesday April 24, 2012, a security worker was delivering cash to Barclays bank on Liverpool Road, Eccles.

Lloyd grabbed the cash box that contained a substantial amount of money before getting into a stolen Peugeot 207, which he abandoned in The Parklands, Radcliffe, before immediately fleeing the area.

A police helicopter was deployed along with detectives, response officers and specialist traffic officers and a search of the local and surrounding areas took place.

A few minutes after the car was located by police, at 3pm, Lloyd returned to the scene, having asked his grandmother for a lift.

He was seen collecting the cash box and putting it into her car.

Both were arrested but no further action was taken against his grandma.

Detective Constable Justin Bryant said: “Following this robbery we commenced a thorough and comprehensive search for the stolen vehicle and due to the efforts of officers on the ground it was quickly located.

“Due to their endeavours, and partly thanks to Lloyd’s dim-wittedness in returning to the scene so quickly, we were able to identify the offender, locate the getaway car and recover the stolen cash in about 30 minutes.

“Lloyd did not think twice about targeting the security guard and even roped his unsuspecting grandmother in to try and get away with this crime but thanks to the efforts of all involved he is now starting a four year prison sentence.”
