CHILDREN could soon be having even more fun on a Bury park thanks to the support of supermarket staff.

Asda stores in Spring Street, Bury, and Pilkington Way, Radcliffe, have pledged to help raise £20,000 with Brandlesholme Residents’ Association.

The money will go towards the cost of refurbishing Purbeck Park, in Purbeck Drive, and allow the association to unlock further funding for the project from Viridor.

Community interest company Proffitts is also supporting the residents’ bid for funding.

Residents, supermarket staff and pupils from nearby Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School gathered at the park to launch the partnership.

To kickstart the fundraising, two dedicated weeks are being held in the supermarkets with raffles, tombolas and other activities.

They run from Monday to Sunday, May 12 at Asda in Bury and from Monday, June 3, to Sunday, June 9, at Asda in Radcliffe.

Supermarket workers will also help with an application for funding from the Asda Foundation, the company’s charity.

Elizabeth Seymour, community champion at Asda in Bury, said: “Brandlesholme Residents’ Association approached us for raffle prizes and we wanted to do more to help.

“This park is particularly battered and the residents are very passionate about improving it. We thought they could do with our support.

“They are going to put in a fitness trail and a nature garden.

“It will be a green project and a legacy for the children.”
